Sulcata tortoise care guide

Centrochelys sulcata

The third-largest tortoise in the world and a 70+ year commitment. Adults live outdoors in a heated, escape-proof pen — no indoor enclosure is big enough long term.

Fossorial — deep substrate for burrowing

Sulcata tortoise enclosure size

Fossorial — deep substrate for burrowing. An adult sulcata tortoise should live in at least 240" L × 240" W × 24" H; we build toward 480" L × 480" W × 30" H (40 × 40 × 2.5 ft, roughly 1600 sq ft of floor and about a 29922-gallon glass equivalent).

Adults need an outdoor pen measured in tens of feet, plus a heated shed.

Hatchling / baby
48" L × 24" W × 12" H recommended · min 36" L × 18" W × 12" H
Juvenile
96" L × 48" W × 18" H recommended · min 72" L × 36" W × 16" H
Adult
480" L × 480" W × 30" H recommended · min 240" L × 240" W × 24" H

Temperature and heating

Halogen flood indoors; outdoors, a heated insulated shed with a thermostatted radiant panel.

Basking / warm surface
100–105°F surface
Warm side (ambient)
85–95°F
Cool side (ambient)
75–80°F
Night
Not below 60°F — heated shelter required

Lighting and UVB

UVB: T5 UVB 10–12% indoors (UVI 4–6); natural sunlight outdoors. Run lights on a 12–14 hours photoperiod, on a timer, and replace UVB bulbs on the manufacturer's schedule even while they still emit visible light.

Humidity

Target 50–60% for hatchlings, 40–50% for adults. Humid hide and regular soaking for youngsters; adults stay dry with a damp burrow.

Substrate and depth

Topsoil / coco coir blend that holds a burrow. Depth: 6–12 in.

Enclosure tips and furnishing

  • Heated shelter or shed
  • Grazing area of edible grasses
  • Shallow soaking dish
  • Solid escape-proof perimeter — they push through fences

Build list

  • Outdoor pen plus heated shed — Adults reach 100+ lb and cannot live indoors.
  • T5 UVB 12% + halogen flood for indoor phases — Shell growth depends on strong UVB when they are inside.
  • Digital thermostat — Every heat source must run through a thermostat — unregulated heat burns animals.
  • Two digital probe thermometers + hygrometer — Read the warm side, cool side and humidity directly — stick-on dials are inaccurate.
  • Bulk topsoil/coir — Burrowing depth over a very large footprint.
