Spotted salamander care guide

Ambystoma maculatum

A secretive, burrowing mole salamander that spends most of its life underground. Cool temperatures and deep damp substrate are essential.

Fossorial — deep substrate for burrowing

Spotted salamander enclosure size

Fossorial — deep substrate for burrowing. An adult spotted salamander should live in at least 20" L × 10" W × 12" H; we build toward 30" L × 12" W × 12" H (2.5 × 1 × 1 ft, roughly 2.5 sq ft of floor and about a 19-gallon glass equivalent).

Floor space and substrate depth matter more than height.

Hatchling / baby
16" L × 8" W × 10" H recommended · min 12" L × 8" W × 8" H
Juvenile
20" L × 10" W × 12" H recommended · min 16" L × 8" W × 10" H
Adult

Temperature and heating

No heat. Keep below 70°F; a basement is ideal.

Basking / warm surface
No basking spot
Warm side (ambient)
60–68°F
Cool side (ambient)
55–60°F
Night
Cooler is fine

Lighting and UVB

UVB: Not required; keep lighting dim. Run lights on a 12 hours on, 12 hours off photoperiod, on a timer, and replace UVB bulbs on the manufacturer's schedule even while they still emit visible light.

Humidity

Target 70–90%. Keep the substrate damp but not waterlogged, with a shallow water dish.

Substrate and depth

Coco fiber, topsoil and leaf litter. Depth: 3–4 in or more for burrowing.

Enclosure tips and furnishing

  • Cork bark flats
  • Leaf litter
  • Shallow water dish
  • Moss

Build list

  • Digital hygrometer + thermometer — Read humidity and temperature instead of guessing.
  • Water conditioner / RO water — Chlorine and chloramine burn permeable skin.

Spotted salamander FAQ

How big should an adult Spotted salamander enclosure be?

At least 20" L × 10" W × 12" H, and we recommend building to 30" L × 12" W × 12" H — about 2.5 × 1 × 1 ft, or a 19-gallon glass equivalent. Fossorial — deep substrate for burrowing.

What temperatures does a Spotted salamander need?

Basking or warm surface No basking spot, warm side 60–68°F, cool side 55–60°F, night Cooler is fine. No heat. Keep below 70°F; a basement is ideal.

Does a Spotted salamander need UVB?

What humidity does a Spotted salamander need?

70–90%. Keep the substrate damp but not waterlogged, with a shallow water dish.

What substrate is best for a Spotted salamander?

Coco fiber, topsoil and leaf litter, at a depth of 3–4 in or more for burrowing.

How big does a Spotted salamander enclosure need to be for a hatchling?

Hatchling / baby: 16" L × 8" W × 10" H recommended, minimum 12" L × 8" W × 8" H. Scale up to the adult footprint as the animal grows.

Is there anything to be careful about when keeping a Spotted salamander?

Skin secretions are irritating. Wash hands before and after handling, never use soap or untreated tap water, and keep handling to a minimum. Wild-caught animals may be protected — check local laws.
