Eastern box turtle care guide

A humid woodland turtle, not an aquatic one. They need deep damp soil, heavy leaf litter, a shallow soaking pool and, ideally, an outdoor pen.

Terrestrial — floor space first. An adult eastern box turtle should live in at least 72" L × 36" W × 18" H; we build toward 96" L × 48" W × 24" H (8 × 4 × 2 ft, roughly 32 sq ft of floor and about a 479-gallon glass equivalent).
An outdoor pen with natural rain and sun is the best possible setup.

Temperature and heating
Halogen flood over one end on a dimming thermostat.

Lighting and UVB
UVB: T5 UVB 6–10% (UVI 3–4 at basking). Run lights on a 12–14 hours photoperiod, on a timer, and replace UVB bulbs on the manufacturer's schedule even while they still emit visible light.
Humidity
Target 60–80%. Damp deep substrate, leaf litter and daily misting; they dehydrate fast in dry air.
Substrate and depth
Topsoil / coco coir with heavy leaf litter. Depth: 4–6 in.

- Digital thermostat — Every heat source must run through a thermostat — unregulated heat burns animals.
- Two digital probe thermometers + hygrometer — Read the warm side, cool side and humidity directly — stick-on dials are inaccurate.
- Bulk topsoil/coir and leaf litter — Holds humidity and lets them burrow down.
