Chinese mantis care guide

Tenodera sinensis

Molting clearance decides the size: at least three body lengths of height so the mantis can hang upside down and pull free. A short enclosure is the single most common cause of a failed molt.

Arboreal — vertical height first

Chinese mantis enclosure size

Arboreal — vertical height first. An adult chinese mantis should live in at least 5" L × 5" W × 9" H; we build toward 6" L × 6" W × 12" H (0.5 × 0.5 × 1 ft, roughly 0.3 sq ft of floor and about a 2-gallon glass equivalent).

Rough ceiling (mesh or fabric) is mandatory — a smooth lid means the mantis falls mid-molt.

Nymph L1–L3
4" L × 4" W × 6" H recommended · min 3" L × 3" W × 5" H
Nymph L4–L6
6" L × 6" W × 10" H recommended · min 4" L × 4" W × 8" H
Adult
6" L × 6" W × 12" H recommended · min 5" L × 5" W × 9" H

Temperature and heating

Heat the room, not the enclosure. If the room drops below 68 °F use a thermostatted space heater or a heat mat on the outside of a side wall (never under the substrate) — heat mats under a burrow cook the animal.

Basking / warm surface
None — no basking site, no heat lamp
Warm side (ambient)
72–80 °F ambient room temperature
Cool side (ambient)
70–75 °F ambient room temperature
Night
Room temperature; a 5–8 °F night drop is fine

Lighting and UVB

UVB: None — invertebrates need no UVB and bright light stresses them. Run lights on a Ambient room light on a normal day/night cycle; keep the enclosure out of direct sun photoperiod, on a timer, and replace UVB bulbs on the manufacturer's schedule even while they still emit visible light.

Humidity

Target 60–70% ambient. Dampen one corner of the substrate every week or two and keep a water dish full — never soak the whole enclosure.

Substrate and depth

Coco fibre or paper towel. Depth: 0.5–1 in.

  • Ventilation: Ventilated on the top and one side; humidity comes from a morning mist that dries out by evening.

Enclosure tips and furnishing

  • Mesh or fabric ceiling to hang from
  • Twigs and silk plants filling the upper half
  • Light mist on the walls each morning for drinking

Build list

  • Vertical mesh-top mantis enclosure — The mantis hangs from the ceiling to molt; mesh gives grip and ventilation at once.
  • Fruit fly and blue-bottle feeders — Flies for nymphs, blue bottles and roaches for adults — mantids only take moving prey.
  • Digital thermometer / hygrometer — Inverts are kept at room temperature — you need to know what the room actually does, not guess.
  • Long feeding tongs and a catch cup — Every interaction — feeding, water top-ups, rehousing — should happen without your hand near the animal.

Chinese mantis FAQ

How big should an adult Chinese mantis enclosure be?

At least 5" L × 5" W × 9" H, and we recommend building to 6" L × 6" W × 12" H — about 0.5 × 0.5 × 1 ft, or a 2-gallon glass equivalent. Arboreal — vertical height first.

What temperatures does a Chinese mantis need?

Basking or warm surface None — no basking site, no heat lamp, warm side 72–80 °F ambient room temperature, cool side 70–75 °F ambient room temperature, night Room temperature; a 5–8 °F night drop is fine. Does a Chinese mantis need UVB?

None — invertebrates need no UVB and bright light stresses them. Photoperiod: Ambient room light on a normal day/night cycle; keep the enclosure out of direct sun.

What humidity does a Chinese mantis need?

60–70% ambient. Dampen one corner of the substrate every week or two and keep a water dish full — never soak the whole enclosure.

What substrate is best for a Chinese mantis?

Coco fibre or paper towel, at a depth of 0.5–1 in.

How big does a Chinese mantis enclosure need to be for a hatchling?

Nymph L1–L3: 4" L × 4" W × 6" H recommended, minimum 3" L × 3" W × 5" H. Scale up to the adult footprint as the animal grows.

How much ventilation does a Chinese mantis enclosure need?

Ventilated on the top and one side; humidity comes from a morning mist that dries out by evening.
