Leopard gecko morphs: a keeper's guide
Albino strains that do not mix, eclipse and the enigma problem, blizzard and patternless — the leopard gecko gene map, with the honesty most morph lists skip.
Leopard geckos have one of the deepest morph catalogs in the hobby, and also one of the most honest problems: several famous morphs come with health baggage that polite morph lists leave off. This guide covers both.
The three albinos that are not one albino
Tremper, Bell and Rainwater (Las Vegas) albinos are three separate recessive mutations at different loci. They look similar and they do not complement: crossing two different strains produces normal-looking double-hets, not albinos. 'Albino' without a strain name is an incomplete description — always ask which.
The workhorse recessives
- Blizzard: patternless recessive, colours shifting with line and temperature.
- Patternless (Murphy patternless): another recessive that erases banding, historically confused with leucistic descriptions.
- Eclipse: a recessive that disrupts pattern and produces solid-colour eyes in combination; strong eclipses can have reduced photoreception — worth knowing, not a dealbreaker.
Enigma: the honesty section
Enigma is a dominant morph with a real neurological syndrome — circling, stargazing, poor prey tracking — that varies from barely noticeable to disabling, and cannot be predicted from appearance. Many experienced breeders no longer produce them deliberately. If you keep one, give it a simple enclosure and easy prey; if you are shopping, know the name carries the risk.

Line-bred looks
Tangerine, hypo, baldy, carrot-tail and the various 'blood' lines are selections, not single genes. They intensify over generations and wash out when outcrossed. Price them as quality claims, not as genetics, and record them on the animal rather than expecting them in clutch odds.
Stacking sensibly
Classic combos like sunglow (tangerine line + Tremper albino) or RAPTOR (Tremper + eclipse + pattern) stack recessives that the calculator handles cleanly. Start with the albino strain settled — Tremper is the usual foundation precisely because Bell and Rainwater do not combine with it.
